I Can Hear You NowLisa Long had been born prematurely and with a birth defect. She was deaf. She learned to cope very well. Her parents’ marriage did not survive. Lisa’s mother is a successful caterer. Her relationship with her ex-husband is quite amicable. This makes it easy for Lisa to maintain a close relationship with her dad, who is a musician.She is now entering junior high school and is quite nervous. Until this year she had always attended a school for the hearing impaired. Lisa has recently had surgery that restored her hearing. She will be attending the regular junior high school in her town. Lisa is worried that she’ll have trouble making friends because people may judge her by the way she speaks. Having always been hearing impaired, she does speak differently. She is seeing a speech clinician and is making rapid progress in her speech.On the bus on her first day of school, she meets Jamie, a grade nine student at her school. He takes Lisa under his wing. They form a strong friendship that grows into something stronger as the year progresses.Lisa is a very talented artist as well as an exceptional student. The book takes us through her first year in junior high, where she experiences many new things. She makes friends, has some interesting adventures, and witnesses the reconciliation of her parents.
