The First Steps Into Reading!

The ICU Book Series was developed for pre-readers (aged 2-4), special needs readers and ELL students.

Start the love of reading early

If your child knows some letters and a few numbers they will be able to read these books. The stories are kept short to keep them engaged and use only letters and numbers to tell the story. Each story they read will build their confidence and start a life long love of reading.

Blue Stripes on Cover- Capital Letters Purple Stripes on Cover- Lower case letters

The ICU Book Series is color coded for the stories told with capital letters and the same story told with lower case letters.

Use on Smartboards

Great for classes of any kind. Homeschoolers can read as a group activity. Preschool and Kindergarten classes can read as a class. ELL groups can read together as another form of learning the English language. Special needs readers will enjoy the fun of reading together.

Developed by Children's Choice Award Illustrator Joni Oeltjenbruns

After working part-time in the school system, Joni watched as special needs readers, ELL students and even first and second graders struggled with the accomplishment and confidence which comes with reading a book. She made a "book dummy" or a hand colored edition of her first book idea and gave it to a fifth grade special needs reader. The reader opened the book and said the letters and numbers outloud. Immediately, the student realized they were reading and before even finishing the book had dashed down the hallway, in and out of each classroom reading the book to anyone who stopped to listen.

The experience confirmed the need for another learning style which allowed every student to feel confident in their learning abilities.

Each short story is illustrated in simple colorful tissue paper illustrations.
