Grandad's War is the true account from 5th Battalion, Coldstream Guardsman Sergeant Stephen Simpson. He was part of the Guards Armoured Division and was on the frontline. This 17 year old soldiers compelling story, is delivered in true Yorkshire man's style. Not with the removed voice of a poet, who imagined the trenches, but with warmth and good humour and the details of every day war. The uncertainty, the daily toil and the acts of implicit bravery from the infantryman. Steve takes us on a journey out of the Yorkshire mines, down to the Army recruiting offices. He becomes a lifelong member of the famous Coldstream Guards. Along the way through Europe Steve scrupulously saved even the smallest of artefacts, to mark his life changing, life threatening experience. Over 200 original war time items were found after his death, all of which are featured throughout his book, adding valuable, visual insight into his life as a soldier during the Second World War.
