When Steven Callahan's small sloop sank west of the Canary Islands, he found himself adrift in the Atlantic in a five-foot inflatable raft, with only enough food and water for 18 days.
Finally, out of flares and out of the shipping lanes, his only hope was to try to float to the Caribbean, clear across the Atlantic to the south and west, hundreds of miles away.
On the 75th day he spotted land. In 76 days he had drifted 1800 miles, the only man in history to have survived more than a month alone at sea in an inflatable raft.
