A true story, based on the author's mother's life.
Lourdes lost her mother to cancer at the age of eight. Being the eldest daughter it was her duty to look after her four siblings; the youngest was only eight months old.
They were subsistence farmers and her father worked at the sawmill five days a week, morning til night, so apart from looking after the household and her siblings, Lourdes had to help tend the land and animals with her older brother Manuel who was twelve.
Poverty was rampant and life was extremely hard, but nothing prepared her for the even worse fate ahead.
