Five ordinary little hens live at Colonel Ponsonby's house. Maud is a Brahma, Dusky, a Maran, Elly a Campine, Buffy a Buff Orpington and Silver a Light Sussex. After several weeks of being allowed to roam in his garden, the Colonel realises the hens are doing much damage to his plants so he builds them a pen in the field and they are shut in unable to roam free. This story traces their fight for freedom, culminating in an epic journey sailing down the stream in a trug in order to meet other hens who also seek their freedom. They have many adventures on the way with humans and animals. They get help from other creatures, a group of mallards, a wise pheasant, some doves and also from a Ranger and the local vet who has a gift of talking to animals. But all the time the intrepid Colonel is on their trail. His own adventures include nearly getting arrested - twice, a very nasty accident at the local sewage farm and being locked in a hen house by an irate lady. There is danger for the hens from a hungry, but not very bright fox and a playful dog who could have wrecked their frail craft. The hens finally reach their goal, down the bright stream, and there is a touching reunion with the Colonel. They make a triumphant return home aboard Colonel Ponsonby's vintage fire engine to a wonderful reception from cheering crowds, a Silver Band, the local press and a magnificent firework display. As Dusky says at the end "Well we made it didn't we Colonel?" and Elly is already thinking of their next voyage.
