Francisco Oller reveals the paintings that helped define a national Puerto Rican identity. Oller painted the mountains, the valleys and plains, the fruits of the land, plantains, coconuts, palm tree fruit, and pineapples.
At a baquiné, jíbaros keep vigil all night, celebrating at the wake of the little angel. Jíbaros sing, drink, and play music. Lovers embrace. Children play. No one weeps for fear that their tears might wet the wings of the little angel on his flight to heaven. An old man bids farewell to the dead child surrounded by flowers and lace. The baquiné is still observed today by many jibaros, who celebrate life both in good times and in bad.
Francisco Oller painted best what he loved most, his island home, Puerto Rico.24-page book for grades 3-8 with free downloadable ELA text-dependent questions and teacher resources from Rebecca Hinson Publishing website.
