Hickle is depressed since his best friend moved and Mr. Boo melted. Sarah tells him, "When your feeling sad and blue, find someone worse off then you." She takes him to the hospital where he meets a girl who has cancer. She teaches him a word game and he falls in love. After he finds out she has a boy friend he vows not to play the spelling game again, but it is to late, since he has won most of the spelling contests in school. He is entered in the state spelling bee. Hickle on Valentines Day finds a cute sweet pickle floating around in a jar. Her name is Susie, who is very wise for a sweet pickle. She tells him he must not disappoint the children and he attends the spelling bee.
