Come Rack! Come Rope! is a classical novel by the English priest and novelist Robert Hugh Benson, converted to Catholicism from Anglicanism. Took place in Derbyshire during those times of the Elizabethan torture of Catholics, when being or protecting a cleric was regarded treason and was liable to be punished with death, it is about the tale of two young couple who parted with their possibility of cheerfulness as one, deciding in its place to be jailed and to become a martyr, with the intention that the will of God may be perfected. The novel was penned almost 9 years after Robert’s entrance into the Catholic Church. The encouragement for the tale be from Dom Bede Camm's story of the recusant Fitzherbert family in Forgotten Shrines, and from Robert’s particular visit to Padley, dwelling of the Fitzherberts, and setting of some portion of the novel, to sermonize at the yearly long journey there. The title of the novel comes from a correspondence of Saint Edmund Campion in which, after torment, he ascertained Catholics that he had shown "no things of secret, nor would he, come rack, come rope." Many of the roles in the novel are classical individuals; only the protagonists, their parents, and a few minor roles are story bound.Robert Hugh Benson was a creative novelist of prose and authored the noteworthy dystopian book Lord of the World. His work incorporated classical, horror and science fiction, contemporary fiction, stories for children, plays/dramas, apologetics, religious writings and articles. He became persistent with his literary career all at once as he advanced throughout the hierarchy to become a Chamberlain to the Pope and afterward labelled Monsignor.Similar with his brothers, Edward Frederic Benson ("Fred") and Arthur Christopher Benson, Robert composed several spooky tales, and stories for younger people and classical prose.
