This mystery features the adventures of Michael and Matthew Jones as they spend their thirteenth summer working on their grandparents Cougar Creek Guest Ranch in the Colorado Rockies. This is the first summer they are out on the range with the cattle, helping the Cougar Creek wranglers. They are sent to find some missing cattle and find trouble instead and are hampered by KiKi, an eleven year old girl who is a guest along with her parents at the ranch. She is outspoken and obnoxious and determined to follow the boys wherever they go. Crazy Pete, an old miner, and his half wolf dog help rescue them from a scary few hours deep in an old mine.
