A Young Adult Novel

Twelve year old Jessica James tries to be good, but somehow trouble always manages to find her. Jessica is convinced that her less-than-perfect school record is due partially to the unusual name her parents chose to give her. Anyone burdened with virtually the same name as an infamous outlaw is undoubtedly going to be connected with mischievous behavior—or at least that’s what most teachers think when they meet her. But this year is going to be different. Jessica is starting the sixth grade, and she’s determined not to get into trouble—regardless of the circumstances that surround her.

The sixth grade begins smoothly, but Jessica quickly realizes that it takes more than good intentions to stay out of the principal’s office. With math being a challenge, and a new girl named Chloe delighting in getting other people into trouble, Jessica sees that the school year isn’t going to be as problem-free as she’d hoped. But there are good things happening in Jessica’s life too; her father brings home a new kitten, and Jessica is appointed to the Senior Volunteer Committee at school. Through the committee, Jessica finds a new friend; an older woman who gives her some sage advice on how to get along with the Chloes’ of the world.

Jessica learns that life doesn’t always work out the way she hopes it will, but she also finds that, by standing up for herself, she can stay out of trouble and grow into a strong, caring human being.
