Tommy has everything until a terrible accident leaves him scarred - physically and emotionally. Taunted by his schoolmates, Tommy runs away from home on a cold winter night, but nearly succumbs to the frigid night air. He is discovered by a strange community of beings, the Carisians, who live deep inside the earth conducting experiments for the benefit of their planet, Carisor, which is threatened with extinction because of pollution. Intrigued by his facial scars and moved by his deteriorating physical condition, they take him to their underground facility. Tommy as disappeared without a trace - vanished. The Carisians teach Tommy a valuable lesson in friendship: they accept him for who he is, and with the benefit of their friendship, Tommy slowly learns to ignore his physical appearance and to reclaim his life. But the story does not end there. The search for the missing Tommy by his family and the community leads to a disastrous confrontation with the Carisians. Tommy's friends must risk their future on earth, and leads to a tense, thrilling stand-off.
