The story is set in 1939. The world is in turmoil as is the life of a young girl who has just turned twelve. Although finally happily settled in Washington, DC with her mother, stepfather and brother after years of being shifted about among relatives, sherealizes her life can change again at any moment. Born of a brilliant, quirky and nomadic mother, she is constantly subject to coping with divorced parents, an unstable life and religious conflict among relatives. In the fall of 1939, facing yet another of her mothers whims, she finds herself on an adventurous cross-country trip on newly completed Route 66. Her family moves to Hollywood. She struggles with a strange lifestyle among movie extras while living in a rooming house run by her mother. As 1940 approaches, she faces another turnaroundanother journey. This book is a must read for anyone who has searched for self amid out of control circumstances and hand-me-down genes. Although fictionalized, the story is based on the authors own twelfth year.
