Toni, John and Luci have survived the journey through space from Alfa to Beta. On landing, they discover that they have one minor problem. They can neither speak nor understand the local language. They seek help from SengRidi, who had learned the Midland dialect, only to wind up as guests of the local military. SengRidi finally arrives and takes them under his wing. They get a brief tour of the planet and end up as guests of the ‘Supreme’ at a state dinner and ball. Fleeing the sudden wrath of the Supreme, they are rescued by a young pilot who agrees to take them back to their spaceship. But their spaceship has disappeared and they discover that the airship on which they have been traveling is bugged. They very unceremoniously dispatch their pilot. Now, stranded and alone on a foreign planet John, Tomi and Luci begin a strange odyssey in their attempt to regain their spaceship and the provisions necessary to return to Alfa.
