SssWitched

language (John Steven Gurney Aug. 7, 2010) , 1 edition
It is Halloween night and four kids are trick-or-treating. Eleven year old Simon is dressed as an alien, eleven year old Penelope is a box of Choco Yum-Yums, eleven year old Claire is a witch, and her seven year old brother Jimmy is a werewolf. They decide to hit one more house before heading home, despite some hesitation because the old woman who lives there, Mrs. Crandale, is rumored to be a witch (but of course that is ridiculous).

When they knock on her door she is very nice, but befuddled. She has forgotten that it is Halloween and she has no treats. When they say “Trick or Treat” all she can do to oblige them is give them a trick. She casts a spell that turns them into the costumes that they are wearing.

Jimmy, as a werewolf, goes chasing after a car that has a dog barking in it. Claire, as a witch, must chase him through the maze of a suburban neighborhood, flying on her broomstick and dodging other trick-or-treaters. Along the way she discovers that she has certain magical abilities. As they struggle to find their way back they have an encounter with a sixth grade bully who has been stealing candy from the younger kids.

Simon, as an alien, is stuck watching Penelope (the giant box of Choco Yum-Yums). No one is certain whether she is even alive or not. An alien spaceship appears and “beams up” Simon. The other aliens are very concerned that “Commander Zornflub” (as they refer to Simon) is acting so strange. They suspect a cranium infection.

Simon teams up with the comic aliens to reverse the spell (or the "ssswitch", as explained in the story). There are a number of false attempts, but eventually things are restored to normal (relatively).

SssWitched has roughly 19,000 words. There are no interior illustrations. The target audience is roughly fifth grade, although there are humorous metaphysical plot twists usually found in books targeted for a bit of an older audience.

The author, John Steven Gurney, is the illustrator of all of The A to Z Mysteries, and 70 of The Bailey School Kids series of books, and the author and illustrator of the book Dinosaur Train.
