The old world is gone, swallowed in ash and dust, plagued by fierce storms. As the people on the surface fight for their survival, a selection of the population flourishes in the underground city of Haven. In this sanctuary, the knowledge of past generations is preserved and improved upon until future generations can rise again to reclaim the surface. But not everyone is welcome in this tightly controlled utopia.
Elsa Jefferson is an outcast. Branded Bad Seed as a child, she was expelled with her mother from the shining city of Haven to a place deeper underground, known as the Darkzone. Elsa’s existence is one of daily struggle. As well as darkness and hunger, she faces prejudice from the Black Guardsmen and Smokers, the Darkzone’s hard and dangerous inhabitants.
Fortunately for Elsa, there is one source of light. Her uncle, Amos Jefferson, left behind the privilege and security of Haven to take Elsa as his apprentice. Fixing and selling the junk he collects on dangerous expeditions to the surface, they scratch a life for themselves in the bleakest of environments.
Then one day, a mysterious and dangerous group ambushes her uncle's wagon and with this violent encounter everything changes…
