The Great Hall of King Canoodlum s palace sparkled with a hundred torches and a thousand candles. The Chief Steward and his six sturdy helpers were climbing the stairs to the Cheese Ward, and the Court Bard was conducting the Cheese Anthem which would herald the climax of King Canoodlum s birthday feast. For it was to be a Stilton - a ripe and deliciously smelly Stilton - which would complete the evening s gastronomic delights. A hundred pairs of eyes were fixed on the oaken doors through which the mighty cheese would be borne. Then the Chief returned alone, his face as pale as a peeled potato. The cheeses had revolted. Later, in the starlit courtyard, the King and his company gazed up at the tower of the Cheese Ward. Yellow, blue-veined hands grasped and broke the iron bars of the window. A hideous figure with two long, sharp horns and one vast blue eye climbed out and shook its fist at the crowd below. The Great Horned Cheese was on the march. The Rebellion had begun. Joseph O Conor told this story on Jackanory, and Jan Brychta has provided the attractive and witty illustrations.
