Walt and Vult, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Twins

Paperback (Forgotten Books Dec. 2, 2017)
Excerpt from Walt and Vult, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Twins

The following work, although one of the most pleas ing, is not one of the most powerful or exciting of the remarkable works of fiction of this author. Hesperus, and The Titan, are more elaborate and finished works. They contain scenes that descend deeper into the heart, and are of a far more exciting interest; yet, this seems to the translator the work most free from objection, most purely artistical, and the gentlest expression of the per sonal character of Jean Paul, which he has left.

One might, before reading, ask what is the object and character of the work? It would be difficult to an swer. But it may be called a series of pictures, de scribing the successive moods of mind of the poet; and from these moods of mind, arise, scenes of comic, ten der, or pathetic interest. It contains Jean Paul's own view of the value of his own art that of an imaginative writer, and the adaptation of such a pursuit to the actual world. It probably throws more light on the personal character of the author than any other of his works.
