Toby has spent almost his entire life living alone in the Bubble – a sterile medical facility that is more prison than hospital. A rare autoimmune disease means he can’t breathe unfiltered air, talk to anyone except through a screen, get a hug.
But everything changes when he receives a revolutionary new treatment, an artificial immune system consisting of intelligent microscopic machines that will live in his blood: Nanotechnological Artificially Intelligent Lifeforms – or NAILs for short.
Toby’s new life outside the Bubble isn’t normal for long, though. A mysterious sleeping sickness sweeps through the country, trapping people in their nightmares. Only because of the NAILs is Toby unaffected. He realises he has just three days to find a cure to this mysterious plague for everyone else – after that, they will start to die of thirst without ever knowing what happened.
As Toby heads across the city, he finds he isn’t the only one to have escaped the effects of the virus – but not everyone who is still awake wants him to find the cure.
THE LAST ONES is the exciting and poignant story of a lonely boy’s race against time to save a world he doesn’t understand but which is sliding towards extinction.
