At age 16, Ballantyne went to Canada where he spent five years working for the Hudson's Bay Company. He traded with Native Americans for furs, making his jouney by canoe and sleigh, which gave him the basis for his novel Snowflakes and Sunbeams (1856). Ballantyne returned to Scotland in 1847 and learned that his father had died.
