Forever Friends

language (Lisa Marie Negele March 26, 2011) , 1 edition
Facing new experiences for the first time is quite disconcerting for many children. Going to school is one such experience, and many kids are nervous or don't want to go as a result.

In this book Dahlia is a bear cub who is anxious about her first day of school. She is discussing her worries with her mother over breakfast, and her mom assures her that there is no need for fear. She soothes Dahlia and helps her finish getting ready for her big day.

When her mother departs and it is time to enter the classroom, Dahlia again feels frightened, shy and alone. As the teacher encourages the children to introduce themselves and share a bit about themselves, Dahlia discovers a bear cub named Petunia with whom she has a lot in common.

The girls quickly become friends and begin to chat and giggle. The teacher has to shush them and admonishes them new buddies to wait until later to talk and play.

By the end of the first day, Dahlia discovers there is no reason to be afraid of attending school. In fact, she realizes she has made a fantastic new friend and can't wait to see Petunia again the next day.

This book will assist parents in preparing their children for their first day of school. Since this is a common time of stress and anxiety for both parents and children, discussing it ahead of time can help.

Reading this story to younger children will enable parents to explain that there is no cause for alarm and that going to school can be a great and fun opportunity. Not only will their kids be learning new things, they will have a chance to make new friends and have new experiences.

Older children can read the book themselves. Parents can then ask questions about the story to make certain their kids understand the message and to give them an opportunity to discuss any fears of their own.

This tale will be enjoyed by children ages 2 to 10. Read it at bedtime, naptime or any time!
