Her first finished novel, yet published after her death, Northanger Abbey is the story of Gothic novel-obsessed 17 year old Catherine Morland. During an invitation to the town of Bath, Cathrine meets Henry Tilney, a clever young gentleman.
Cathrine also meets John Thorpe while still in Bath and she tries to maintain her friendships with both the Thorpes and the Tilneys, though John Thorpe continuously tries to sabotage her relationship with the Tilneys. This leads to several misunderstandings, which upset Catherine and put her in the awkward position of having to explain herself to the Tilneys and the story evolves.
Northanger Abbey gives the readers of Austen's later novels a look behined on how the writer's style evolved after her very first finished novels.
