Mare Knotting is about to discover the beings that gave raise to our myths, but what surprises her more than their reality is the fact that they are the children of angels.

Mare is the single mother of three-and-a-half year-old Clarissa. But while Mare’s world spins because of her daughter, Christian—Clarissa’s abandoning father and Mare’s ex-boyfriend—has never had and has never wanted anything to do with Clarissa. However, Christian’s mother, Gene, has always played a huge role in Clarissa’s life—and Mare’s. Mare’s parents passed in a car crash shortly before she turned fifteen, and Gene has been a second mother to Mare ever since Christian and her began dating. Wrapped up in work, school, and Clarissa, Mare tries hard to make a good life for her daughter. So, Mare has no time for a social life—even after she meets gorgeous Daniel Stotts.

While she tries to convince herself that she has no feelings for fellow-classmate Daniel, Mare also has to try to ignore the signs that Daniel has reciprocating feelings for her. But once Daniel confesses that he is telepathic and warns Mare to forego the DNA-splicing financial-aid project she has enrolled in at school, Mare finds it pretty simple to shut Daniel off her radar. Mare believes Daniel is delusional because according to him, he has heard in the minds of the corporation that they are truly trying to create a superhuman, nothing like they are claiming to be doing. And that may be for the best—Mare believing Daniel is unstable—because the unanticipated contact by Christian makes Mare realize that she had never gotten over him the way she had thought she had.

Proceeding with the project, when Mare turns in her results, she has to be rescued from inhuman beings sent after her. Thankful someone rescued her; Mare is astonished to find that her rescuer is Daniel—and that he moves as inhumanly as the beings chasing her. And once Daniel has Mare safe, he explains to her the truth of the world; that Ethereals—fallen angels, their children, and their grandchildren—exist… and they are where the human’s vampire and werewolf legends have stemmed. As if everything isn’t overwhelming enough for Mare already, she then finds out everyone she knows is a part of that Etheric world—including her daughter!

All being too much for her mind to handle, Mare blacks out—awaking to realize who and what she really is.
