The complete title of this gem by Andy Adams is The Log of a Cowboy A Narrative of the Old Trail Days and the story is that indeed, a narrative about a boy, around 18 years of age, who joins a group of grown-up men who are driving a pack of three thousand cattle from Mexico to an Indian reservation in Montana. The year it all takes place is around 1880, the golden age of cowboys and western stories and the book was indeed called an “all-time best” by none other than The New York Times. The crew and the herd they are driving go through all sorts of adventures, some exciting, others funny or downright dangerous. They must cross wild rivers, they meet hostile Indians, they must endure drought and they must resist the tricks of swindlers. The narrative is fictional, but it relies on the author’s own life experience – born in Indiana, in a family of pioneers, Andy Adams worked for more than a decade as a cattle herder in Texas and started writing cowboy stories after he settled in Colorado Springs. He knows the life of herders from the inside – he uses their vernacular in the narrative and he expresses a deep and sympathetic understanding of these men who were tough on the outside, but gentle and loyal in their soul. The book is full of interesting characters, but it does not lack beautiful descriptions of the nature surrounding the crew as they progress towards their destination. They follow the Great Western Cattle Trail, also known as the Old Trail, that began at San Antonio and continued through the Buffalo Gap and all the way to Nebraska – a trail that takes the best, the toughest and the bravest to pursue, making it perfect for the herders in the book.
