Loyalist Runaway

In the winter of 1782 Halifax is jammed with shabby refugees from the war in the rebellious American Colonies, with red- and blue-coated soldiers parading and carousing, with merchants and camp followers and all the parasites of war. Eleven-year-old Kitty Byles has lived half her life in this town since her family fled Boston in 1776, the first year of the conflict.

Now she has decided to run away. With her hair close-cropped and tucked under her cap, she signs on as a cabin boy on a coastal schooner, making her way to Boston and finally to the rebel armies camped outside still-loyal New York. She's bound to find her dear uncle Tommy, an outcast from her family since the day he took up arms against the King. Tommy introduces Kitty to a kindred spirit, Alexander, formerly enslaved and now in search of his family who have escaped to Nova Scotia. Together they devise a great plan to return to the new land they'll both call home.

Based on actual diaries from the period, Loyalist Runaway is an action-packed account of one girl's gripping adventures during the American Revolutionary War.
