Oliver Twist is a young boy whose mother died upon his birth and father is nowhere to be seen. Oliver ends up in an orphanage and is not treated especially well. Most of the children do not have enough to eat while the people in charge are well fed. The boys take a chance on asking for more food and Oliver is selected by chance. When he asks for more food he is relegated to a workhouse where the conditions are poor. From there on, he lands in a number of uncomfortable situations including thieving gangs, though sometimes finding kind people who take pity on him. In the long run, he has a difficult life, but in the end, he emerges with good friends and peace in his life.
