Monday starts badly for Joe Pemberton as he faces the school bully on his way to class. The day gets worse in a science lesson, but then Joe experiments with a lightbox in the storeroom. The box projects a secret message to Joe and his friend Henry.
When Joe arrives home, he learns that his father’s plane has crashed into the sea during a business trip. Joe believes the coded message from the lightbox is from his father, and he uses it to open a portal to the world of Trynata.
On Trynata, Joe meets Echo, a Martec, and learns that the evil Graphox controls this world, having stolen the light from the ancient gods. Joe and Echo set out on a quest to bring back the light to a world of darkness and find Joe's father.
