It is, so far as I know, unprecedented that a poet of W.H. Auden's stature would single out a mountaineering book for special praise. But when David Roberts published his second book Auden wrote: "David Roberts has already written one excellent book, The Mountain of My Fear; Deborah, in my opinion is even finer." "Never, before or since," Jon Krakauer points out, "has an author of climbing books been taken so seriously."

Roberts burst onto the scene in 1968 with a book he had written in nine days — yes, nine days! — as a graduate student. In 1970, Deborah followed, and together these two books changed the literature of mountaineering forever. Roberts wrote with poignant intensity, not just about what happened on the mountain, but about his friendship with a climbing companion, Don Jensen. His narratives were deeply personal. He was interested in the nature of friendship, how it changes or endures under pressure, and what happens to the relationship when each person becomes totally dependent on the other for survival.
