Sea Captain's Daughter

language ( Sept. 1, 2011)
On Nantucket Island, a young girl begins a journal just as her sea captain father's lucrative career hunting whales is coming to a close. Once one of the wealthiest cities in the country because of whale oil riches, the island faces many changes as New Bedford steals the whaling trade when the railroad comes to make transportation of the valuable oil faster and cheaper.
Sara Owen Burgess tells the story of her life on the island thirty miles off-shore as history changes everything she has come to accept as normal. A trip for the whole family to Cuba, her short but exciting stay there, new friends and experiences all add excitement to what is the interesting perspective of a young "historian" recording her daily life. The journal covers the period from her teens to the day she marries and her wedding trip to China on her father's ship.
