The Genius is a semi-autobiographic novel by Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser that was first published in 1915. The Genius was banned immediately because of the damaging interpretation of sexuality. The main character of the novel by Theodore Dreiser The Genius is a talented artist Eugene Witla who gets over a lot of difficulties in his way to become an acknowledged artist. Going through rises and falls, Eugene assesses the life of a creative person in the capitalist society. The main hero meets representatives of an American elite as well as ordinary workers. However, he didn’t lose his heart after a nervous shock and creative crisis. The spiritual mission, family relationships, appraising “values” of the bourgeois world are main motives of the novel. Dreiser considered The Genius to be his best work.
