Edith Wherry Muckleston (1876-1961) was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to parents John Wherry and Sara Ellen Brandon. Her parents were both missionaries who lived in Peking, China where Muckleston lived from age two to sixteen. Muckleston attended college at Wellesley (1898-1900), Stanford (1900-1901), the Sorbonne, and she received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1907. Muckleston is the author of such celebrated novels as "The Red Lantern," (1911) "The Wanderer on a Thousand Hills," (1917) and "The Jade Mountain" (1925), all set in China.
