Cornwall 1917. Brother and sister – Edward and Amelia – travel to stay with their sick mother’s uncle and aunt (Tobias and Florence) in their remote house set on a bleak headland. The youngsters’ father is away at war.

Tobias proves to be a strange and morose character. His sister Florence is jollier.. Jollier still is Mrs Day – Rosie, the housekeeper – “…Rosie Day, that’s me. Though they calls me Rainy Day when I’m a-down in the dumps…”

The manor house across the moor holds a mysterious fascination for their strange Uncle and the youngsters are tempted to explore, but are warned not to approach it by a grim-faced Tobias. Amelia persists in asking awkward questions, much to her brother’s chagrin. One such question is: “Is the manor house haunted?” which is ignored by Florence. But when asked of Rosie, Rosie’s reply is; “Goodness, only by your uncle.” This enigmatic reply serves only to fuel the youngsters’ interest in the manor house, and in their Uncle's mysterious obsession...

Now the characters involved with the manor house enter the story. They are a professor, his wife and her niece Agatha – but there is also a mysterious man lurking in the background - ‘the man in the brown suit’...

And then, the youngsters find out about the curse...
