Martha Finley was a tutor and writer of many books, the best known is the 28-volume series of Elsie Dinsmore which was printed more than 38 years. his father was Presbyterian clergy Dr. James Brown Finley and his wife and cousin Maria Theresa Brown Finley. She was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. Martha published most of her stories using the nom de plume Martha Farquharson.
