Alena Archer is an attractive and extremely popular young woman who appears to have it all. Sarah Miller, on the other hand is a bit shy and insecure. Sarah and her small group of friends just don’t feel like they fit in with the other kids in school. Sometimes they’re teased and this leaves them feeling even more like outcasts, but at least they’re thankful that they don’t have to endure the kind of tormenting that a boy in their class named Kent Evans does.
Alena becomes seriously injured in a car accident and is admitted to the hospital where Sarah’s mother works. The young girl recovers from her physical injuries but for some mysterious reason doesn’t respond emotionally. Her physician is baffled by her unresponsiveness and has her transferred to the psychiatric wing of the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
When Mrs. Miller finally convinces Sarah she should visit Alena, Sarah is scared to death to walk into the girl’s hospital room. She’s sure that Alena doesn’t even know she exists! And she wonders what could someone like her possibly do to help the most popular girl in tenth grade?
