About the Book

American poetry arose first as efforts by colonists to add their voices to English poetry in the 17th century, well before the unification of the 13 colonies as a result of thye American War of Independence. Most of the colonists' early poetry relied on British models. During the 19th century, a distinctive American voice began to emerge when, in the later part of that century Walt Whitman began to be recognized internationally.
