Here Mr. Grant had bought a large stretch of woodland, near which he set up a still larger tannery than his first one, and here Ulysses spent a happy boy hood.His father owned a number of horses, and the little son never seemed so happy as when he was allowed to care for these animals or to drive them about. On the other hand, the horses seemed to understand that he was their friend. They loved the child and obeyed him readily.
