Walter Scott
Redgauntlet, Vol. 1
Paperback
(Forgotten Books Dec. 6, 2017)
Excerpt from Redgauntlet, Vol. 1
Redgauntlet was originally called Herries, Lockhart says, until Constable persuaded the author to choose the more striking name. It was published in June 1824, and was received somewhat coldly. To contemporaries, no doubt, it could not present the interest of autobiography as it does to us. It was Scott's only novel of the year he was occupied with the second edition of his Life of Swift, with reviews, with a Tribute to the Memory of Lord Byron, and with the furnishing and decoration of Abbotsford.
