Excerpt from Two Hundred and Nine Days, 1827, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Journal of a Traveller of the Continent I felt some difficulty in writing down my remarks on such matters as struck me during my tour on the continent; because the exoterical and external reflections on buildings, and streets, and the face of the country, which every man will make in travelling, may already be found in Guides and Manuals for Travellers, where they remain quietly unread; and esoterioal and inward thoughts, respecting men and manners, genemlly involve personal ohsewatious on the character and conduct of individuals, which have been obtained in the confidence of society, and which cannot be made public without a gross breach and violation of that confidence. I could mt consent to tmuscribe the height and length of each cathedral, and the number of its pillars and windows; still less can I consent, Judas like.
