In explanation of the title, I must state that bachelor girls are scarce in Burma. I was sitting one evening in the gymkhana club at Rangoon between two married ladies. We had all three been enlarging on the fascination of the land and the delights of being there, when one of them broke out abruptly, How lucky you are 1Y ou travel about and see it all, and yet you are firee. The touching confidence of friends in my ability was shown by repeated queries as to whether I was going to do a book on urma after I had been there two months.
