Excerpt from Generydes: A Romance in Seven-Line Stanzas
From the poem itself we get no clue as to the original. The translator, to eke out his verse, occasionally introduces such phrases as the story tellith it me' 'mynne Auctour seith myn Auctour tellith me' 'as the writeng scyth' 'myn Auctour doth witnesse' 'the story doth witnesse' 'the Story tellith me' 'the story makith mynde' I me reporte onto the letterys blake' as my Auctor doth write' in the story leke as I do fynde' (6732) but he tells us no more. In the Roxburghe Club version there is a French original spoken of, and a Latin translation from it by a clerk at Hertford, but here the information ends.
