Spice and the Devil's Cave, first published in 1930 and winner of the Newbery Honor Award, is a fictionalized version of the year leading up to Vasco da Gama's 1497 voyage to India, seen through the eyes of the young Ferdinand Magellan and a banker and navigator named Abel Zakuto. The 'Devil's Cave' refers to the hazardous southern tip of Africa that the explorers must pass. Illustrated with 28 woodcuts by noted artist Lynd Ward.
