What a throwing-off of shackles of convention and old customs! What a spring burst of inspiring ideas and glorious harvest of realization! The barbarous system of negro slavery surrendered its last stronghold; education became the acknowledged right of all, instead of the luxury of the fortunate few; politi cal liberty, to a degree undreamed of before, replaced aristocratic rule.
