Dhan Gopal Mukerji
The chief of the herd
Hardcover
(Books Inc. distributed by E.P. Dutton March 15, 1929)
Written in 1928 before the extensive work of late twentieth century naturalists determined that herds are made up of females and prepubesvcent males. Males able to mate leave the herd and live solo or in the company of other 'bachelors'. Mukerji, who obviously loves and admires elephants in his several books about them, posits Sirdar as "elected" Chief of his herd at age 30, having received the anointing from the old chief who dies at age ninety. Elephants normally live to sixty or so years but Mukerji has several old-timers of ninety and even one hundred years in this story. He offers the notion that elephants marry and live in nuclear families within the herd.
