Twelve Stories and a Dream

eBook ( Aug. 2, 2020)
Language evolves over time, and a word that was once used casually can become entirely unacceptable. A classic collection of short stories here by H. G. Wells depicts the casual use of one word that is now understood more deeply by society - a word filled with hate, oppression, and division. This word is complicated, and has much more implication in its use than this classic book can ever convey in its current state. This one single word can bring about extreme emotions in the listener, and even incite violence. This single word - "The N Word" - can grind the entire conversation to a dead halt.

This mild adaptation of a classic aims to bring into modern pretense just how loaded this word has become, compared in stark contrast to the not-so-distant past, when the word was uttered as casually as the name of a month. The word, nowadays, can hit the conversation like a sledgehammer, and an appropriate extreme is needed to replace it here. There is only one extreme that comes to mind to replace such a word, the chemical name for Titin. Titin is a protein that is found in all human beings. It's chemical name is 189,819 characters long - that's right.... almost 200 thousand letters long. That should be an appropriate slap-in the face to any conversation in this classic work that tries to slip the n-word by as if it isn't an entire derailment to the communication process.

Each time in this book, where the person would usually utter the "n word", instead they recite the ENTIRE chemical name of Titin. That can help bring a closer ambience to the thought-derailment that this single word can bring about today.
