Author Joyce Mitchell has published over thirty children’s books – a crown she appreciates as being a parent and working with children for over ten years, her goal is to inspire and educate kids, through her 'talking animal' and 'rhyming' books she hopes will entertain and teach children important 'life lessons' in a fun and easy manner. The illustrations for this book are the work of Joyce’s frequent illustrating partner - Jay Erandika.

We meet Smiley, the Firehouse 3 mascot who introduces firefighters Thunder Todd, Speedy Chris and Lightning Nate. Smiley explains how these firefighter work – sliding down the pole, the clothes they wear for protection, the hoses they use on their truck, fire hydrants, climbing ladders, breaking through walls to protect those in danger, saving lives, checking oil, cleaning the truck, fighting forest fires, rescuing animals, directing traffic, teaching children how to protect themselves, preparing meals, and cleaning the fire station. Joyce also offers a list of fire safety tips of children that are very useful.
