"Are you anybody else's missing piece?"
"Not that I know of."
"Well, maybe you want to be your own piece?"
"I can be someone's and still be my own."
Shel Silverstei, The Missing Piece
The book The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein gives us a lesson of similar implication. This book is about a circle who is missing a piece of itself and how it tries to find its missing piece through snowy weather and mountains. While on the way, the circle meets up with several triangular shaped pieces that the circle tries on itself, but none of the triangular pieces would fit the circle. The circle is a symbol of us and its journey mirrors our life journeys. No status, fortune, or achievement will make us complete. We don't journey toward completeness or perfection in our lifetimes. The grasping at completeness makes us miserable and unconfident. We muddle our identity, confuse our sense of selves with others. This is a truly insightful way to state the theme that we are unique individuals and it's foolish to change our shapes for being someone else.
This book is an absolute gem not to miss!
