Emma is Jane Austen’s most acclaimed novel. It is also Austen’s longest novel and often cited as the most difficult of Austen’s novels. The novel is generally praised for its domestic realism.
Emma can be thought of as a departure from Austen’s other novels as it focuses on a wealthy and beautiful protagonist with no financial concerns and no need to marry. This removes the quest for financial security through marriages that underpins the narrative structure of Austen’s other novels. Emma therefore has a distinctively lighter tone that the rest of Austen’s oeuvre.
Austen’s stated goal with the novel was to write a novel with a heroine “whom no one but myself will much like”.
