The story begins in 1775 in a village inn. A story of murder of local landowner, Reuben Haredale, is told. Barnaby’s mother is visited by mysterious person. For strange reasons, she takes Barnaby and leaves her dwelling. Fast forward to 1780, 27 years after Reuben Haredale’s death, a ghost is seen. Further plot moves to anti-Catholic riots that year in London. Barnaby and her mother moved to London, and Barnaby is by chance involved in the riots. There are many more key characters in the novel, ups and downs, twists and turns, and some violence typical to the riots, but no more can be revealed here – it is to be left to the reader to find it out themselves.
‘Barnaby Rudge’ was first published in instalments in 1841.
Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and died in 1870. He left a legacy of magnificent novels that are still very popular with readers.
