Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist and travel writer, most noted for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses.Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life, but continued to write prolifically and travel widely in defiance of his poor health. As a young man, he mixed in London literary circles, receiving encouragement from Andrew Lang, Edmund Gosse, Leslie Stephen and W. E. Henley, the last of whom may have provided the model for Long John Silver in Treasure Island. In 1890, he settled in Samoa, where he died in 1894.A celebrity in his lifetime, Stevenson's critical reputation has fluctuated since his death, though today his works are held in general acclaim. He is currently ranked as the 26th most translated author in the world.Contents **VELAY THE DONKEY, THE PACK, AND THE PACK-SADDLE ........ 1 THE GREEN DONKEY-DRIVER .................................................. 8 I HAVE A GOAD ............................................................................ 18 UPPER GÉVAUDAN ..................................................................... 26 A CAMP IN THE DARK ............................................................... 27 CHEYLARD AND LUC ................................................................. 39 OUR LADY OF THE SNOWS ..................................................... 44 FATHER APOLLINARIS ............................................................. 44 THE MONKS .................................................................................. 50 THE BOARDERS ........................................................................... 59 UPPER GÉVAUDAN (continued) ............................................ 66 ACROSS THE GOULET ............................................................... 67 A NIGHT AMONG THE PINES ................................................. 71 THE COUNTRY OF THE CAMISARDS ................................... 77 ACROSS THE LOZÈRE ................................................................ 78 PONT DE MONTVERT ................................................................ 84 IN THE VALLEY OF THE TARN .............................................. 92FLORAC ........................................................................................ 103 IN THE VALLEY OF THE MIMENTE .................................. 106 THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY .......................................... 111 THE LAST DAY .......................................................................... 120 FAREWELL, MODESTINE!..................................................... 127
