The year is 1935 and 14-year-old Margy is looking forward to celebrating her first year in the safety and comfort of her Aunts' "Fine House" in Bancroft, Ontario, but unexpected circumstances threaten this assumption. Throughout the crisis Margy manages to experience all the aspects of village life, including a grand New Year's Day reception with an unwelcome guest, the annual skating carnival and costume party that ends in a spontaneous chivaree for a young couple, and the first swimming contest of the season in which Margy accidently wins a prize.
